Sukhothai Travel Guide
UNESCO Ancient City, Best Hotels & Historical Tips
Serene, graceful, and deeply poetic, Sukhothai translates literally as the “Dawn of Happiness”. Founded in 1238, it served as the very first capital of the Siamese Kingdom and the birthplace of Thai art, alphabet, and Theravada Buddhist architecture.
Today, the UNESCO-listed Sukhothai Historical Park stands as one of the most impeccably preserved archaeological sanctuaries in Asia. Unlike the busy roads surrounding many historic cities, Sukhothai’s ancient royal core is an idyllic, vehicle-free parkland of reflective pink lotus ponds, shady rain trees, manicured lawns, and timeless stone Buddhas possessing an unmistakable smile of supreme peace.
Sukhothai’s Iconic Heritage Highlights
🪷 Wat Mahathat
The grand spiritual heart of ancient Sukhothai. Surrounded by brick moats, lotus reservoirs, and nearly 200 secondary stupas, dominated by the signature lotus-bud chedi.
✨ Wat Si Chum
Home to Phra Achana (“The Immovable One”), an awe-inspiring 15-meter seated Buddha gazing serenely through a dramatic narrow vertical slit in an open-roof brick mondop.
🏝️ Wat Sa Si
An enchanting island temple floating peacefully in the middle of a lotus-filled lake, accessed by a wooden bridge and home to a classic bell-shaped stupa and walking Buddha.
🐘 Wat Sorasak & Si Satchanalai
Exquisite elephant-buttressed stupas in Sukhothai and the forested sister heritage park of Si Satchanalai, showcasing dramatic laterite craftsmanship amidst teak groves.
Essential Sukhothai Travel Tips
- Old City (Muang Kao) vs. New City (Muang Mai): Sukhothai is split into two towns separated by 12 kilometers. Stay in Old Sukhothai right near the Historical Park so you can wake up early and cycle straight into the ruins, rather than commuting back and forth from the modern commercial center.
- Bicycle is King: The Central Zone of the Historical Park is flat, peaceful, and closed to motorized cars. Renting a bicycle outside the park gates costs just 30–50 THB per day. It is by far the most enjoyable and eco-friendly way to navigate the temples and lotus ponds.
- Getting to Sukhothai: Bangkok Airways operates scenic boutique flights into Sukhothai Airport (often voted one of the world’s most charming open-air airports). Alternatively, take a fast train from Bangkok to Phitsanulok (4.5 hours), followed by a 1-hour taxi or shared minivan to Sukhothai Old City.
- Park Entry Zones & Cash Needs: The park is divided into five zones (Central, North, South, East, West). The main zones (Central and North/Wat Si Chum) charge 100 THB each plus 10 THB for a bicycle. Ticket kiosks accept cash only. Pay for flights, boutique resorts, and upscale dining using your Revolut multi-currency card to enjoy real-time interbank foreign exchange rates with no hidden fees.
- Sunrise Magic: Arrive at the gates right at 6:30 AM. Watching the golden morning sun rise over Wat Sa Si’s lotus lake with mist hovering over ancient stupas before tour crowds arrive is a bucket-list Thailand memory.
